Did Homophobia Conquer Alexander

Divide and conquer appears to be Oliver Stone's final strategem, as his bio Epic Alexander goes down in flames. Cheap points, and, possibly, some mitigating box office lucre, can be gained by criticizing an American audience overseas in Europe. Stone now blames homophobes in the Bible Belt for the universally bad press and low box office of his stinker, according to Digital Spy:



"Oliver Stone has blamed the poor reception of his historical biopic Alexander in the United States upon the population's narrow-minded prejudiced stance on homosexuality.Alexander, which portrays the Macedonian leader Alexander the Great as bisexual, has done very poorly at the US box office despite being directed by the acclaimed Stone and starring the likes of Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie and Anthony Hopkins.

"He expects Europe to take to the film more openly as Europeans have a greater appreciation for history and are more open-minded concerning morality and sexuality.He says: 'Americans don't read about ancient history like the Europeans. And in America there is a raging fundamentalism and morality.'

"From day one the Bible Belt people did not show up because there was one phrase throughout the media and that was 'Alex the gay'.

"'So you can bet you�re a*s the Americans aren't going to see a war hero who in their heads has something wrong with him.' But I don't regret what I have made here for a minute. It's the epic of my life.'"

Golly Gee, Oliver, The Corsair doesn't have a narrow-minded stance on anyone's sexuality, and we read Ancient classical history, like, all the time, in fact, right now we are Achilleus'-heel deep into Tiberius' cruel reign and Germanicus' ill fated campaign against the provinces, as described, in such elegant noble house Latin, by Tacitus in the Annals of Imperial Rome, and we just thought Alexander just sucked wind.

The film entirely missed the Classical intensity of Alexander, who was, quite literally, the high point of Greek culture (as we, and Hegel, see it), the literal embodiment of the Hellenic heroic ideal, namely, Achilleus made man.

But then, to be honest, we hated Troy as well. No one can really recreate the effect of the image, borne over several milennia, of the image of the myths and ideas presented in a Classical Text Upon First Reading (The Corsair salivates), and all those dark rhythms, ungodly voices from stone cairns in the key of Minor, in the original Greek or Latin.
