Slutwear, RIP

The Old Gray Lady said, this Sunday, that the slutty look, with, for example, the thong showing, is officially dead (The Corsair sprays hot tears):

"Adam Lippes, founder of the lingerie line Adam + Eve, said the reason is simple: thong fatigue.

"'The thong got skinnier and skinnier, and women got tired of it,' he said. "And they got sick and tired of seeing string hanging out of the top of every celebrity's jeans. It's just gross. I think it went too far over the edge and enough is enough."

We'll gloss over the very inappropriate but obvious joke we can make about the name "Adam Lippes" and his "thong fatigue," but instead, we will note, sadly, that Reuters agrees, the trend is over -- you were right before my eyes:

"'The slut is out now. She's dead,' said Godfrey Deeny, senior fashion critic at Fashion Wire Daily.

"In recent seasons, fashion has been filled with skimpy tops exposing midriffs, cleavage-revealing necklines and jeans slung so low that precious little was left to the imagination -- looks impossible to avoid on such pop icons as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

"This season, blousy linen took the place of sheer chiffon, while shades of white chased away an edgier black. Necklines were up, while hemlines were hovering down at the knee.

"'It's very ladylike. It's not jump-into-bed fashion,' Deeny said of the new look on runways as established powerhouses to new designers trotted out more fabric and less skin than in seasons past."

The Corsair says, with a glistening teardrop falling, dramatically, from his eye, "farewell, slutwear, parting is such sweet sorrow; goodbye easy access thong, plunging necklines, microminis, 'ho - siery everywhere, farewell. But everything in fashion comes around again, so, not farewell -- not forever, o precious slutgear, if only until another season."
