The new establishment? Vanity Fair, learning from the Putin controversy surrounding Time magazine's 2007 Person of the Year (Thanks, Stengel), is courting a definite spike in web hits with their Vanity Fair 100. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin tops the list this year ("RUMOR HAS IT: Putin has secretly stashed away more than $40 billion --from Russia’s oil-and-gas riches -- in secret bank accounts in Switzerland and Liechtenstein."). WSJ owner and media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who last year was number 1, this year is number 2 ("He and Wendi support N.Y.C.’s P.S. 184M, the first public elementary and middle school in the country that provides a bilingual education in English and Mandarin Chinese."). Observer is scratching its head.

Some other placements: Bill Clinton's power is fading, he is no longer in the Top 10 at #11 (In 2007 Clinton was #6, in 2006 he was #7). Michael Bloomberg -- who may or may not be Treasury Secretary in a McCain OR Obama administration is #12. Barry Diller is #18. The mysterious Vivi Nevo is #43, Oprah, #43. Diane Sawyer -- ! -- is #80. Jay Z is 56. Matt Drudge is #74. The Sir Edmund Hillary of social climbers, Charlie Rose is inexplicably #81. And Tom Brokaw is #95.
