Howie Kurtz: The Media Is A Useful Foil For The Republican Ticket

"(The Media) are a useful foil for the Republican ticket," said Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz. Kurtz was on The Ed Schultz Show minutes ago talking about the media role in last night's convention speeches. "It taps very much into the culture war .. and the McCain campaign has made the tactical decision to (attack the media)"

"Beating up on the media is good for Republican politicians," said Kurtz when asked about the tenor of the speeches. Kurtz also noted that there is a little bit of hypocrisy on the part of McCain. "(McCain) loves the give and take of journalists ... we do have to point out that this is the same guy who was a bit of a media celebrity and ... was a darling (of the media) for at least a decade!"

Will the tactic work, Schultz asked. "There's so much cable TV time to fill ... I think women are going to recoil at some of that talk ... She gave a really good speech (last night) but I think there is a little subconscious pull that maybe (the media went too far on (Governor Palin)."
