We're not going to entertain the possibility that this "promotion" -- wink, wink -- was a face-saving maneuver by the alphabet network to keep Old Steph happy after not giving him the Nightline slot that he clearly coveted. Heaven forfend! According to Medialife:

"'This Week' host George Stephanopoulos has been appointed chief Washington correspondent by ABC News, reporting for 'World News Tonight,' 'Nightline' and 'Good Morning America,' in addition to his own show. Stephanopoulos has been with ABC News for 10 years."
