We are in the midst of a Pat Buchanan meltdown. That poor steak-and-potatoes eating bastard ("Boy, the way Glenn Miller plays .."). His world is collapsing ("Songs that made the hit parade .."). A black man is on the verge of becoming POTUS ("Guys like us, we had it made ..")! National Insecurity ("Those were the days ..")! It shatters his Rockwellian-Saturday Evening Post equilibrium, where egg cremes were a nickel and milk was delivered at the front door in a glass bottle and "the nigra," to be sure, knew their place -- sports and entertainment ("Didn't need no welfare state ..")! Shoe-shine man: Yes; President: No ("Everybody pulled his weight/ Gee, our old LaSalle ran great. Those were the dayyyyy!")
And so Buchanan went predictably ballistic when he heard of former Secretary of State and Bush family loyalist Colin Powell endorsing Senator Obama. He went on Chris Matthews' Hardball last night, which was watched by many political junkies because of the delayed start of "60 Minutes," and made an ass of himself, hustling on the race angle. From CrooksandLiars:
"Buchanan: Alright, we gotta ask a question, look would Colin Powell be endorsing Obama if he were a white liberal democrat...
"Salon's Joan Walsh: Oh, Pat, I'm really sorry you went there.
"Pat Buchanan: Look, General Powell Started off by saying it would be electrifying an African American and it is naive Joan to suggest it had nothing to do with his decision.
"Chris Matthews: He said that if that were his driving motive he would have done it weeks ago because the guy looked African America weeks and months ago.
Walsh: And Obama's been courting him. He's been courting him for months.
"Buchanan: This is why he threw in the whole kitchen sink. A lot of things are silly and ridiculous. Economics and Supreme courts justices, it's...
"Salon's Joan Walsh: That's not silly...
"Buchanan: All the motives except for the one everybody is wondering about.
"Walsh: Which is what? Race, I mean Pat, you know Pat. this is beneath you."
Oh, no it's not. Pat Buchanan has been spectacularly bigoted throughout his professional life. his career low was his campaign in 2000, with the -- how does one put this nicely? -- "eccentric" Ezola Foster. Ezola Foster is probably the only African-American in the history of the world that has ever wanted to honor the Confederate flag.
