In: Kim Hastreiter. Kim is like the godmother of downtown cool. She appreciates and nurtures talent even as she -- a Scorpio -- burns with a passion for the subject of design. So many artistic, bohemian types that would otherwise be deemed too eccentric have gotten their start from Kim and Paper. It is the nature of the world that the more artistic a person, the less able to navigate the world they are; Paper is an institution that champions their achievements, their dress, their manner and tells them it's okay to be a little strange/ahead-of-the-curve. The Corsair started as a commenter on the Papermag.com message boards in the mid-to-late 90s, and will never forget those free-wheeling days of online anarchy.
More than just being a facilitator for creativity, Kim is, among other things a writer of a monthly column and now, mirabile dictu, a book. From Papermag:
"PAPER's own Kim Hastreiter has written an amazing book on her late great friend and American fashion design legend Geoffrey Beene. The book was comissioned by the CFDA and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Geoffrey Beene Foundation which supports young design talents. And last night, CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg opened up her studio in the Meat Packing District to host a book signing for Kim and hordes of fashion bessies flocked to 14th St! Guests included designers Narcisco Rodriguez, Ruben & Isabel Toledo, Doo.ri, Yeohlee, Threeasfour, Cushnie et Ochs, Gilles Mendel, Carlos Falchi and Ralph Rucci as well as Beene loyalists Helen Ohagan, Laura Jacobs and Russell Nardoza."
