Tom Daschle, Obama Chief Of Staff?

On The Chris Matthews Show's "Tell-Me-Something-I-Don't-Know" segment, Elizabeth Bumiller of The New York Times claimed that insiders are talking about former South Dakota Senator Tom Daschle -- a macher in the Obama campaign -- as possibly having a lock on the Chief of Staff position should the Democratic presumptive nominee win in November.

Interestingly, Daschle -- as Bumiller reported in March -- was once not only a possible democrat, but a possible Kerry running mate in 2004:

"'There were times when he rose to the occasion and showed himself to be a real pragmatist,' said Tom Daschle, the former Senate Democratic leader who was one of those who met with Mr. McCain in 2001 about switching parties and who is now supporting Senator Barack Obama. 'There were other times when he was motivated by political goals and agendas that led him to be much more of a political ideologue.'

"Such swings are common in politics, but for Mr. McCain, Mr. Daschle said, 'those swings have been far more pronounced and far more frequent.'"

Bumiller enjoys reminding us that Kerry asked McCain to join him on the 2008 Presidential ticket, and McCain skillfully uses the opportunity -- with flashes of choreographed temper -- to attack Bumiller's Times, a bete noir of his Republican political base.
