Saakashvili, Drunk .. On "Thumos"

American-educated Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was, like Wall Street, drunk. On Thumos. Thumoeideutic excess must be a function of Empire, like the fiery gladiatorial fundament in Augustine's Confessions (Book 6, Chapter VIII). That would explain the madness surrounding subprime mortgage loans made to people who couldn't possibly pay them back. That would also explain the serious crazy around buying a gas-guzzling, environment-polluting SUV in the run up to $4 a gallon oil. That would explain President Saakashvili sassing off to a belligerent super-thug like Vladimir Putin.

What the fuck was Saakashvili thinking? Did he think launching attacks into Southern Ossetia would go unpunished? From the NYTimes:

"(Russian) Soldiers spoke of the Georgian president, Mikheil Saakashvili, in Tbilisi, the country’s capital, as having an outsize sense of his own importance. He put his military — fledgling and supported by the United States — up against theirs. It was no match.

"'If that guy does not understand the situation, we’ll have to go farther,' said the officer, sitting under a tree near a column of tanks. 'It’s just 60 kilometers to Tbilisi.'"

Blame it on Thumos.
