Senator Arlen Specter Visits The Howard Stern Show

Why is Arlen Specter running for reelection to the united States Senate? It would be, at the outset, an uphill climb. Senator Specter has a problematic relationship with the right wing of his party, exacerbated by the fact that he voted for President Obama's stimulus package. And he is a cancer-survivor who really should be enjoying his golden years without the hassle of running for elective office (he will be 80 in 2010). From Gather:

"Senator Arlen Specter visited the Howard Stern Show this morning. The Senator from Pennsylvania was in New York drumming up support and money for his next re-election campaign.

"You may recall, Senator Arlen Specter is a cancer survivor. He's had a couple of bouts with Hodgkin's Disease and has treated it repeatedly with chemotherapy. Specter said that despite his illness, he went to work practically every day. He said working in the Senate every day helped him keep his mind off the cancer. Robin said if she had cancer she would be consumed by the illness and unable to work. Specter said work is the world's best distraction.

"Howard asked Specter what he thinks gay marriage. Specter says he thinks 'the gays' should have all the rights as straight couples, but that actual marriage should be kept between a man and a woman.

"... Ultimately, Senator Arlen Specter was in New York raising money for his next campaign. He says he needs to raise $30 million."

WTF.
