John Edwards Admits To Affair

(image via thestate)

In the past we might have said that it was kind of a savvy move of Edwards to admit to his affair on a Friday, letting the little-read Saturday papers feast on it, hoping it will their salacious appetites would be whetted by Monday. But in this age of the internet, the blogs are already in Full Feeding Frenzy Mode, chewing over what is essentially a private betrayal. Especially sad is the fact that Edwards was whispered as a possible Veep candidate for Obama -- and they did look good smashing together in Michigan -- also, had he wanted it, the former Senator from North carolina easily could have become the next Attorney General in the crusading RFK mode (a role he was, quite frankly, born to play).

Alas it was not to be. Will this end his political career? Oyr crystal ball is opaque on that. From ABCNews:

"John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extramarital affair with a novice filmmaker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today.

"Democratic presidential candidate former U.S. Senator John Edwards (D-NC) speaks to supporters during a campaign event at the Keene State University in Keene, New Hampshire January 6, 2008.

"In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.

"Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test."
