David Spade's Exaggerated Sense Of Self

David Spade is infamous among the famous for only dating celebrities. Whether Lara Flynn Boyle (Who, at the time, called him "peanut"), or Heather Locklear, Spade is all about models and the B-List, which is about all that is within his social reach (Exaggerated cough suggesting feigned detachment). His embarrassing sense of his place on the great Hollywood food chain was trumped, low-key, by Sean Penn. Artie on The Howard Stern show told this story. From Marksfriggin:

"Artie told Howard that David Spade has a story about Sean Penn that he told once. He said that Spade was in the same hotel as Sean Penn and Spade asked him to give him a call. Penn called him and tried to get in touch with him but he was under a different name. Penn told him it was tough to get in touch with him since he was under a different name. He told Spade to call his room and he was there under his own name."

There is a Zen lesson somewhere in there, clouded by a hazy nimbus from Penn's Marlboro Lights.

Spade can be self-important, but I think overall he seems like a decent guy.

Have you ever heard him tell the story about the time his assistant tired to kill him (and very nearly did)? Pretty compelling stuff.

I haven't, but I know the story and it is pretty compelling. On the scale of overinflated Hollywood self-importance Spade is not too bad.
