HBO's John Adams Wins Most Emmy Nominations

Clearly Laura Linney put in the best performance as Abigail Adams in the television medium last year on HBO's John Adams. That goes without saying. And it's good to know that "Dexter" is getting some recognition. Still, there are disappointments. Showtime is not nearly getting enough love. "Brotherhood" is quite probably the best drama on television -- Entertainment Weekly all but recognizes it as such -- yet it gets no Emmy love. If there were any justice in the world, Annabeth Gish would be nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

The Wire, as Denton says, was robbed. The Corsair doesn't get "Damages." And that irks us. The narrative is too convoluted -- it gives us cognitive vertigo, not in a good way -- and the acting all-round is way too hammy. It is not inconceivable that the overwrought narrative feeds, clumsily, into the pretensions of The Powers That Be (The Corsair sips a Domaine Giraud Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tradition 2005). Medium's Jake Weber -- thanks Popwatch -- puts a lot of effort into his low-key, understated performance that is the backbone of that creepy drama.

From TheHollywoodReporter:

"It's a big day for cable as three networks, AMC, FX and Showtime made their debut in the best series categories at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards.

"AMC's critically praised period drama 'Mad Men' landed 16 nominations, including best drama series and best lead actor in a drama series for star Jon Hamm.

"In the top drama series category, it was joined by FX's 'Damages,' Showtime's 'Dexter' as well as ABC's 'Lost' and Fox's 'House.'

"'Mad Men' led the series field along with NBC's '30 Rock,' which nabbed 17 noms, including best comedy series and acting honors for Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey.

"For best comedy series, defending champ '30 Rock' will face 2006 winner 'The Office,' HBO's 'Entourage' and 'Curb your Enthusiasm' and CBS' 'Two and a Half Men.'

"Overall, HBO's miniseries 'John Adams' expectedly was the most nominated program with 23 mentions, including best miniseries and best lead actors noms for Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney."

Full list here. And EW's "Who Got Snubbed."

I refuse to pay for HBO, so I'm waiting for Season 5 of "The Wire" to hit DVD next month. Haven't watched Brotherhood, but added to the Netflix queue on your recommendation.

Love "30 Rock." Best comedy since "Arrested Development" was shot in the back of the head by Fox.

At least, that's what I think.

What do you think about "Weeds?"

I waver.

I love Weeds (well, I love watching Mary-Louise Parker act and "be", I cannot separate the two); "30 Rock" goes by like in 30 seconds, not 30 minutes, it is that damned good.

I thought Season 2 of Weeds was pretty great but felt like Season 3was a bit of a drop-off. The loss of U-Turn really affected the show, IMO. Seeing that guy in beer commercials now makes me laugh.

I, too, enjoy Ms. Parker simply being.
