"Iron Man blasted into the box office stratosphere over the weekend, selling an estimated $100.8 million in tickets at North American theaters and almost certainly establishing a new movie franchise for Marvel Entertainment. 'The word of mouth through the weekend was tremendous,' said David Maisel, chairman of Marvel Studios, the New York entertainment company’s newly created film production unit. 'I can’t think of a better start.'" (NYTimes)

"A pair of book parties kicked the weekend into high gear. On Friday, while Carlos Mota was throwing a dinner for Giambattista Valli at his Chelsea pad that drew Allison Sarofim, Astrid Muñoz, Mary-Kate Olsen, Nina Garcia, and Valentino, John Bartlett hosted his eight-month old shop's first book signing in honor Albert Maysles' A Maysle Scrapbook. 'I designed my Fall 2000 collection based on Grey Gardens, and he came to my studio to interview me, along with Todd Oldham, for his DVD,' the designer recalled. 'I was so humbled.'" "House Democrats continued to expand their majority Saturday night after Louisiana state Rep. Don Cazayoux emerged victorious in a special election for retired Rep. Richard Baker’s (R) district, which had been in Republican hands since 1975. Cazayoux narrowly beat former state Rep. Woody Jenkins for the 6th Congressional District seat. With all 512 precincts reporting, Cazayoux had 49.2 percent of the vote compared to 46.27 for Jenkins, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State ... He benefited from a strong fundraising advantage over Jenkins, $848,000 to $475,000, with much of the help coming from national Democrats. The DCCC spent $920,000 on the contest and PACs contributed another $270,000." (TheHill)

"Kate Moss is desperate to sing on stage with her new boyfriend Jamie Hince's band The Kills at Glastonbury next month. But the 34-year-old model's appearance could be as embarrassing as when she once was booed off by Babyshambles fans in Florence after she sang with the band's frontman, her ex, Pete Doherty. A music insider says: 'The Kills are playing on the same day as Pete Doherty which might have something to do with Kate wanting to get up there and sing with Jamie.'" (Thisislondon)

"For years, Larry King was as familiar a sight in Washington as one of our monuments. He broadcast his overnight radio show from here, and his 'Larry King Live,' was born and raised here. He was a regular at Duke Zeibert’s and The Palm. He had an apartment that overlooked the city, married, divorced, dated and married again, and divorced again, and was in every way an authentic Washington character ... One meaningful constant, though, is Larry’s commitment to help those who, like him, suffer from heart disease ... Every year since he has hosted a gala Washington fundraising dinner, which always features a big name act (in the past, Celine Dion, Vanessa Williams, Tim McGraw, Donna Summer), big money, a popular silent and live auction and, of course, the man himself. This year’s dinner was this past Saturday night, at the downtown Ritz Carlton, and featured singer Seal, comedian Darrell Hammond and illusionist Nathan Burton as the entertainment." (NYSocialDiary)
