That whole Senator Joe Lieberman thing is kind of touchy in the United States Senate. Although Lieberman votes consistently Democrat -- about 85-90 percent of the time, according to Majority Leader Reid's spokesman -- on everything except issues of national security, his flirtation with a speaking role at the Republican National Convention might be the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back. Majority Leader Harry Reid has been navigating a careful course between keeping Democratic control of the august body and the rising anger from the party's Left. Reid spoke out, strategically, on Olbermann. From TheHill:
"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) suggested to a television interviewer late last week that Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) could lose his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
"In an interview Friday night on MSNBC, host Keith Olbermann asked Reid if there was 'anything that he could do that would make you move to take his leadership position away on Homeland Security.' Reid responded: 'Yes, of course,' but did not elaborate."
Lieberman, who was defeated in the Democratic primary for his Senate seat by Progressives, has been floated more than once as a possible SecDef in either a Bush or McCain administration. More here.
