A Little Of The Old In And Out

In: Bar Refaeli. Aside from having the cover to Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit issue, model Bar Refaeli was also tapped to take over MTV's House of Style following in the tradition of Molly Simms, Shalom Harlow, Amber Evangeline Valletta and Cindy Crawford. It's been a good week, we'd say.

Out: Contemporary Art. How fucked up is it that a hacky punk like Damien Hirst will most likely be the last great profiteer of contemporary art for the foreseeable future? Though beauty in the form of Bar Refaeli is doing fine, contemporary art is in the proverbial hour of exigency as a result of the bad economy and the tightening purse strings of the wealthy. From Bloomberg:

"Paintings by Francis Bacon and Mark Rothko went unsold at Christie’s International in London tonight as bidders rejected high-value works in the auction house’s first test of the contemporary-art market in 2009.

"The two pictures, being sold separately, had been estimated by Christie’s to sell for a total of as much as 8.5 million pounds ($12.2 million). Both failed to attract a single bid. Art dealers said the sale showed collectors are nervous while the economic slump continues.

"Bacon’s 1954 picture, 'Man in Blue VI,' had been in the same private collection since 1971. It had been expected to sell for between 4 million pounds and 5 million pounds."
