Jimmy Fallon's Video Blog Starts Monday Night

Can Jimmy Get His Groove Back? (image via buddytv)

Can Jimmy Fallon be cool? Can a once-regarded-as-cute comic infamous for his contrived scruffiness rule the night? On the surface it seems doubtful, though Lorne Michaels rarely fails (Lorne even beat Howard Stern back in the day when CBS counterprogrammed video from his radio show against the live SNL; bad move, Moonves). Jimmy also may or may not have the help of "The Roots," an immensely cool band, as in-house performers. And fallon was tolerable as one-half of the Weekend Updaters with Tina Fey. The problem is, post-Fey Fallon has been in some hugely execrable projects (did he really need to play an inept cop opposite the saucy Queen Latifah in "Taxi"?) And then there is the "Pepsi" commercial, in which Fallon sold his ass for the caffinated beverage. From Variety:

"Viewers will get a first taste of Jimmy Fallon's new NBC yakker next week.

"Video blogs starring Fallon will start appearing nightly at 12:35 a.m. on NBC's website beginning Monday. Although originally conceived as a dry run for Fallon's takeover of 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien,' the webisodes will instead be more lo-fi, freeform-style looks at what Fallon is up to on the eve of his hosting gig.

"The blogs - which will run around five minutes -- will change every day, and may range from behind-the-scenes at a Fallon stand-up gig, or a riff on something he's found on the streets, to a clip of Fallon running around his new offices."
