George Clooney's Bash For Darfur Refugees

Opinions vary as to whether or not celebrity charity bashes for Third World refugees are hypocritical affairs -- the champagne, the paparazzi, the gowns contrasted with the poverty -- or free publicity for worthy causes that might otherwise go unheralded. The Corsair falls into the latter category. Celebrity, as the game is presently practiced, is an absurd affair (Could celebrity be the aristocratic impulse straining against the constraints of the democratic form of government?). Imagine: someone giving you gift bags in the hopes that you will be photographed with their luxury items; imagine: a human being asking another human being for an "autograph (Averted Gaze)."

But gather many celebrities in a central location and there will be paparazzi. And proximate to the paparazzi will be the celebrity press which will carry the message of the evening across the oceans and into at the very least the back of the minds of millions (along with the sly pics of the nip-slips and other wardrobe malfunctions). George Clooney, who uses his celebrity in equal parts in pursuit of "the sweet ass" as well as after noble causes, threw a star-studded bash for the refugees in Darfur that we are glad to publicize. Do your thing, George Clooney. From Thisislondon:

"George Clooney could certainly show our celebs a thing or two about throwing a bash. Not only did he amass a stellar group of A-listers for his party in Mayfair last night, but he only went and raised (USD $14.6 million) for charity in the process. Boy, his halo must be feeling tight this morning.

"The Hollywood star joined forces with Roger Jenkins, a senior executive at Barclays, for an event at which the 100 or so guests were charged as much as $15,000 a ticket.

"Guests inevitably included Clooney's best friend Matt Damon, as well as Scarlett Johansson, Cindy Crawford, Sarah Ferguson, Guy Ritchie, Bono and The Edge (just to name a few).

"Clooney and Jenkins may seem at first glance an odd couple. But the link is Roger's wife Dijana, a glamorous 36-year-old who is a brilliant networker.

Our sources say Mrs Jenkins helped to organise last night's event, held at their $23.3 million home, bringing together the A-list guests for a dinner and party, which went on until 4am.

"The evening raised money for the victims of Darfur, and George gave an impassioned speech about their plight.

"The guests might well have been moved - but it didn't stop them from necking the alcohol.

"As Kid Rock supplied the music, security guards had to be dispatched to fetch extra supplies of champagne after party-goers got through hundreds of bottles within two hours.

"Model Eva Herzigova arrived in $4.4 million worth of loaned Chopard jewellery. However, she had to face the indignity of handing it all back over to a representative from the company at the gates as she left to go home."

Not a good look for Eva, being a human billboard (especially, at a charity event). More here.
