Because Charlie Rose Is Tricky

Just as Henry Kissinger is famous -- or infamous -- for grinding celebratory dinners to a halt by turning attentions from the honoree by relaying some self-referential and thoroughly obnoxious anecdote suggesting that he is no longer as powerful as he once was, Charlie Rose has a similar gimmick. His words of praise to those more socially prominent are often gnomic. His words are delivered in such a way as to be taken as congratulatory but ... they reveal nothing. Machiavel! From Fashionweekdaily:

"Last night, the lighthouse at Pier 61 was packed full of art-world legends and their adoring fans. The occasion: Legends 2008, Pratt's scholarship benefit and gala honoring Takashi Murakami, Julian Schnabel, and Barbaralee Diamondstein-Spielvogel. Guests enjoyed cocktails and the music of the Budos Band before taking their seats for dinner and the awards ceremony, emceed by Charlie Rose.

"Before the ceremony began, Schnabel chatted with Rose and Ingrid Sischy. 'It's very nice that they would want to honor me,' he said. 'I've not been involved with Pratt at all.' Enter Sischy, who chimed in: 'But he has had several pratfalls!' 'Here's what I say about him,' Rose said as he came by, 'He's the best filmmaker today for films that are almost impossible to make.' Schnabel's response: 'That's a tricky remark!'"
