Howard Stern appeared on David Letterman last night. It was old friends bantering over familiar territory for the most part. Stern has mellowed, to a degree, in that even his most shocking pronouncements aren't so shocking anymore. It was interesting to hear from the both of them considering that now America's two most notorious "Man Childs" are married.
Conan's debut last week sucked all the media oxygen from the room, but this week the two shows compete in earnest. And Stern went so far as to declare himself "Team Dave," something he would not do on his radio show. From The Examiner:
"Howard Stern made his triumphant and epileptic return to The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday night after a year and a half off the late night talk show circuit. Howard Stern talked about the downfall of terrestrial radio, called Rush Limbaugh a 'big bloated turd,' and showed exclusive pictures from his wedding to Beth O. last fall. No matter what the topic David Letterman brought up, though, Howard Stern kept bringing the conversation back to one thing. 'We gotta beat this Conan,' he said. 'I’ll do anything you want as long as we beat Conan.'
"Howard Stern then launched into a straight out slam of The Tonight Show’s former host, Jay Leno.
"'I didn’t like Jay,' Howard Stern said bluntly. 'I never liked Jay. I can’t STAND Jay. I’ve never seen anybody who behaves like a robot like this guy.'"
In the background you could hear Dave saying, "Thank you," to Stern for saying outright what he couldn't. Leno's feud with Howard Stern sizzled in the waning months of his tenure at the Tonight Show. The feud began when Leno poached "Stuttering" John Melendez from the Stern show to serve as his announcer without giving Stern a heads-up.
