David Simon, creator of HBO's The Wire, will address the future of professional journalism at a National Press Club luncheon on Monday, June 8. This should be an interesting conversation because Simon is a controversial speechifyer -- some regard him as the spectral voice of dying American journalism, others see him as a windbag.
One of his more controversial statements is that The Wire, HBO's gritty tale of urban decline and decay, was about the end of the American empire.
