MTV's Spring Break Returns To Panama City, Florida
Remember MTV's Spring Break? The network is having a bad year, but it is banking that the buxom hardbodies can jazz up those sagging Nielsens. As we get older, though, Spring Break seems farther and farther away with each passing year, but it is still there, this time returning to Panama Beach, Florida. We wanted to know primarily if the images of well-off co-eds frolicking in the sun would be a good graphic as a backdrop to the worsening economic crisis. The patient Janice Gatti of MTV Networks answered our questions about this year's MTV Spring Break:
The Corsair: Do you think the recession will affect the tone, backdrop of the festivities?
Janice Gatti: We think that now more than ever, college kids need a break. We're hoping to offer students some time away from the stress, where they can enjoy time on the beach and catch some great musical performances. We’re also providing a ton of games and opportunities, including the USA Rock Paper Scissors College ChAMPionship, where the winner will get $20,000 toward college tuition.
The Corsair: Is this the first time MTVN has run musical performances across all of its channels for Spring break (MTV, mtvU, MTV2, MTV Tr3s, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, and MTV.com)? And why not VH1?
Janice Gatti: Spring Break has always been an MTV event. We often broadcast performances from spring break on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Hits, MTV Jams and MTV.com. This year, with the FNMTV Special, our audiences will get even more performances.
The Corsair: How did the decision go to Panama City Beach come about?
Janice Gatti: This is the second year in row that we’ve held Spring Break in Panama City Beach. We’re always seeking out the top locations for college students, so this was a natural choice - it has great beaches, is easily accessible for road trips, and has been a college staple for years."
