Beth Stern: Howard Stern Is A Chess Nerd

(image via lucytheblog)

Is being a chess nerd actually nerdy any more? Hasn't the rise of the Silicon Valley class made intellect once and for all cool? If even "geek-gossip" has its own cache, then why doesn't the geekiest of pass time -- chess -- operate operate at the margins of its own flavor (The Corsair lights a Cohiba Behike). Vladimir Nabokov -- the coolest postmodernist novelist and comparative literary critic ever -- was the ultimate chess nerd. And so is RZA, the coolest music arranger -- sorry, Quincy -- ever. Now, Howard Stern, the father of modern radio, is outed as having an unnatural love of the thinky boardgame that has its OK!Magazine:

"'He is a big teddy bear and an amazing father,' she says on The Morning Show With Mike & Juliet. 'He loves animals ... we share that passion. He’s sweet; he’s kind.'

"Something else you might not know about Howard? He's a geek!

"'He plays chess ... he’s a chess nerd!' Beth reveals. 'There’s nothing wild and crazy about my Howard. He’s a great husband…so far, so good.'"

Remember in 2006 when Stern, on the "I Hate Les Moonves Tour," described his feud over getting his old show tapes from Viacom as being a multidimensional chess game (Which, we cannot fail to note, he won) More here.

Chess is anythign but nerd. It teaches vital skills in diplomacy, politics, negotiation, and the art of disembowling your foe and cutting his heart out and leaving his head skewered on a stake so that all of your enemies will tremble in fear before your mighty battle prowess and respect you as a great warlord. Chess is for real men.
