This blogger is looking forward to Zombieland which should be out next month. It looks hot. Actually, we believe that the current pop-cultural fascination with zombies and vampires and monsters is because of the American economic collapse. Zombies, particularly, tend to rise on the pop-cultural radar at moments of great governmental debt. The late 80s, during Reagan's second administration, was the golden age of zombie films. One might even go so far as to argue that necrified zombies are the archetypal symbols of public debt.
But that's neither here nor there. Zombieland, which looks grand, stars (unfortunately) Woody Harrelson. Harrelson is -- how does one say this? -- trailer trash. Harrelson has a hardscrabble past. And while he was an amiable dunce on "Cheers," afterwards serving -- servicing? -- as cougar bait to accomplished actresses like Glenn Close, he has never done anything of consequence on screen. But that doesn't stop the man from speaking on the subject of politics and culture often and always, topics Woody should really ought to avoid. For example, he starred in Oliver Stone's execrable "Natural Born Killers," a film which clearly revels in the trailer trash serial killer's "Mickey & Mallory." Harrelson used the press tour for that film delivering perorations on violence in the media. What was he thinking?
Harrelson wasn't thinking. Harrelson's brain may be fried from his -- ahem -- "advocacy" of marijuana. Whatever the case, he should never, never, venture in front of a journalist. Woody has no moral gravitas. From Playboy (via Nikki Finke's DeadlineHollywoodDaily):
"PLAYBOY: You talk a lot about corporate greed, but do you ever feel a conflict working for giant corporations as an actor? Your other big new movie, 2012, is a gargantuan Sony product.
"WOODY HARRELSON: Yeah, there’s definitely a conflict, though I don’t look at Sony as a terrible corporation the way, for example, Fox is. Fox is bad news. I do not like Rupert Murdoch. He’s like Goebbels, Hitler’s propaganda guy. Murdoch is waving the flag not because he gives a shit about it but because he just wants to make money. It seems to be tried and true for him, though now I guess his empire’s taken a bit of a hit."
Whatever one feels about the programming of Fox News (and we do have issues with that), comparisons to Hitler -- except in the case of an actual genocide -- are profoundly dumb. And we need to stop. It belittles the signal event of the modern era. Has Harrelson actually studied the Holocaust, or is this just from hazy conversations in opaque rooms with his stoner buds?
