Someone at The Nation once remarked that British intellectuals have turned the Book review into an art form because so many of them have to live off of it. Yeah, I'd say Hitchens is the Updike of political-historical-literary book reviews, which mean, lo ultimo, the best. The Corsairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01804543581141264145noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5376280.post-1110934484975424282005-03-15T19:54:00.000-05:002005-03-15T19:54:00.000-05:00He is such a lovely man to be around and hear talk...He is such a lovely man to be around and hear talk. What I learned from him that night was that in arguing a point, one strives to REFINE his position, NOT to persuade the other party to his point of view. It is such a fabulous idea.

There had also been some times when he'd come in for his 7:30 usual shot (on the Mathews show) a bit soused--you could smell the scotch on him, but he was always lucid in his opinions and points made on air.

My bookcase is full with his stuff. I just recently got "Why Orwell Matters" but have not delved into it. He is also a fabulous book reviewer. On par with John Updike, I think.

Jesus, I cannot stop singing this man's praises. Very unlike me. He is just sick of Amnesty International and their impotent cries of "human rights," he's always been that way. Hitch likes to fight. To debate. It is a womder he was ever at The Nation, with its high concentration of pacifists. The Corsairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01804543581141264145noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5376280.post-1110919902644033292005-03-15T15:51:00.000-05:002005-03-15T15:51:00.000-05:00Oh yes, excuse the mis-spellings. Once, close to midnight, after he'd "guested" on Rivera Live (Geraldo's "Lawyer" gig on CNBC now long defunct) Hitch and I went next door to a Greek restaurant and had more than a few gin richeys while discussing Nicolae Ceausescu. I had mentioned to him (during a break) that my family emigrated from Communist Romania in '78 and we struck a conversation about our Beloved Leader and his comeuppance on Dec. 26th, 1989. And so we went together next door and shot some shite and killed a part of our livers. He is a phenomenal man, IMHO. He is a brilliand essayist and, as you say, a dynamic debater. I dropped a few lines/ides from his "Letters to a Young Contrarian" but he didn't seem too impressed. He just wanted to drink and bullshit. And so we did that. He came in several times after that night--always talking about Clinton's blow job--but we never really hung.

It's somewhat strange how he broke it all off with The Nation, although I must say--after working with Katrina as guest host of "Equal Time" (now also defunct), I can truly say she is not too pleasant of a person.

Chris Hitchens is the next Orwell.
