Media-Whore D'Oevres



"Republican presidential candidate John McCain, looking to chart an independent course on U.S. foreign policy, called on Wednesday for a more vigorous international diplomacy and a new effort to rebuild frayed relations with allies. Distancing himself from the sometimes unilateral diplomatic approach of President George W. Bush, McCain said the United States needs to live up to its responsibilities as a world leader and become a 'model citizen' in the global community. 'The United States cannot lead by virtue of its power alone,' the Arizona senator, back from a trip to Iraq, the Middle East and Europe, said in a speech to the World Affairs Council in California. 'Our great power does not mean we can do whatever we want whenever we want, nor should we assume we have all the wisdom and knowledge necessary to succeed. We need to listen to the views and respect the collective will of our democratic allies,' McCain said." (NYTimes)

"The consensus among knowledgeable Democrats is that Obama will win over enough superdelegates to clinch the nomination before the convention in August. But one longtime associate said this of the Clintons in private conversation last week: ''They will do anything -- anything -- to get nominated.'' That reminder deepens the Democratic dilemma." "Penthouse, the magazine, with only 12 pages of ads in the 150-page March issue, will never be a powerhouse alone. But will Penthouse Media Group, as a public entity, excite investors? Playboy Enterprises is struggling. At $8 its stock, adjusted for all capital changes, is trading for less than half its price when it went public 37 years ago ... But Bell is full of ideas for brand extensions of the sort that never worked too well for Playboy. He plans to sell X-rated mobile applications for cell phones that will allow users, who pay up to $10 a month, to watch videoclips of Penthouse Pets. The company has a line of 20 Penthouse-branded accessories (like a French maid's outfit) that will be sold through the magazine, as well as Penthouse.com and a few boutiques. Visitors to Penthouse's Web site, which is more salacious than the magazine, can pay $20 a month to watch streaming videos with titles that include Cheek Freaks 4." (ABCNews)

"While broadcast news continues mostly avoiding anything that resembles genuine news in primetime, 'Frontline' devotes a delicious 4½ hours to deconstructing the steaming mess in Iraq, with enough internal bickering ('Friendships were dashed') and turf battles to make for great historical drama. Producer-writer-director Michael Kirk doesn't turn over many new leafs, but he assembles the old ones in a compelling, polished manner that intelligently connects the dots to show where the Bush administration's grand aspirations went howlingly wrong. In terms of PBS' ongoing battle to justify its existence, 'Bush's War' ranks as a formidable foot soldier." (Variety)
